Aesop’s Tails

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Seniors performed two showings of “Aesop’s Tails,” a fantastic play of fables. The play combined well-known Aesop’s fables with new ones written by the students. I was especially impressed by the musical numbers. Congratulations to all the Seniors, as well as Jon, Charlotte, Stuart, Jennifer, and all the teachers who worked on the play and the music. Here is a slideshow, accompanied by the Seniors playing “Entende,” a four-part recorder piece.

North Branch has something new! A 1992 alumni, Heath Matysek-Snyder, worked with his family to install a firewood art piece. As Bonnie said on Facebook: “The objects in the firewood represent components of North Branch School that Heath wanted to honor: picnic table – community, desk – love of learning, tricycle – play. Thank you, Heath, David A., Barbara, Autum, Jeremiah, Xavier, & Stephanie!!”

Band Fair 2013

On the morning of Band Fair 11, we were all a little worried about the weather. I packed towels and a raincoat, in anticipation of the 90% chance of thunderstorms. However, the weather transformed itself, and we enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures in the 70s. The wonderful live music featured: The Rick Olivarez Trio, The Design Jazz Project, The Dreamtime Project and Jacob Allen and Friends. Students especially enjoyed seeing our own teachers Jon Goff, Stuart Gunter, Jennifer Stuart and Genevieve Dennis on stage. Along with the music, people enjoyed activities such as face painting, the cake walk, a duck pond, the paths through the woods, and tasting Cardinal Point wine. Thank you very much to our hosts, Cardinal Point, and to all of our musicians and sponsors.

Peter and the Wolf

Primary One and Two put on a charming production of Peter and the Wolf on Friday. They created wonderful costumes and choreographed their own movements. The original score was the accompaniment to the play. Congratulations to the Primaries and teachers for all of their hard work!

North Branch participates in Relay for Life

North Branch students, staff and parents gathered in the morning and afternoon to mark our participation in Relay for Life. Students, teachers and families made prayer flags to remember and honor loved ones who have had cancer. The nursery class started off the morning walk and the middle students walked for the last hour of the day. Our community raised $546 for cancer research, which we presented to Amy Kirchner of Nelson County Relay for Life. Thank you to Robyn Ebelherr for organizing this event.

Seniors visit the Museum of Fine Arts

On Wednesday, the Senior class took a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. It was a gorgeous day, and the class ate lunch outside and played games near the sculpture garden. Then we went inside for a guided tour through the Egyptian, Greek and Roman exhibits. It was fascinating for the students to see some of the objects they have been hearing about in Humanities.

Spotlight on Spanish, the garden and poetry

The Juniors recently learned about large and small animals in Spanish classes. During assembly, the Junior Ones and Oscar sang El Cucarrón Marrón (The Brown Beetle). Junior Twos performed a short play called El Camaleón Aburrido (The Bored Chameleon), inspired by The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. Here is a snippet of the play:

Last, Seniors sang Y el Pasto Verde Crecía Alrededor, a song about a tree in a city. More videos of the Spanish performances, as well as some great poetry from Primary Two, to come later this week.
